What to expect during the divorce process

If you have never gone through a divorce in the past, there is no real way of knowing what to expect as the process moves forward. Of course, there are things you can do to prepare for anything that could come your way.

Above all else, you need to understand the many issues that could require your attention during the divorce process. These include but are not necessarily limited to the following:

  • Child custody
  • Child support
  • Spousal support
  • Property division

All of these details can be difficult to work through, especially if you are not on the same page as the other person.

For example, property division can entail everything from the marital home to retirement accounts to motor vehicles.

At first, you may want to consider an alternative dispute resolution. For example, mediation gives both individuals the opportunity to be heard. This also gives you more power during the divorce, as you don't have a judge making all the final decisions.

Of course, there are times when mediation doesn't work, which will lead your case to the courtroom. When this happens, you know that you will be spending more time and money working through your differences.

It's hard to know exactly what to expect during the divorce process because no two divorcing couples are in the exact same position. If you find yourself faced with divorce and wondering what to expect, the best thing you can do is prepare for everything. When you know what's to come, as well as your legal rights, you can decide which steps to take.
