Do these things before talking divorce with your child

Once you and your spouse decide to divorce, you need to turn your attention to the future. For many people, this means discussing what will happen with their child (or children).

This is never easy to do, especially when your child is old enough to fully understand what is going on. Even so, you need to take on this process as soon as possible, as you want to do whatever it takes to ease his or her stress.

Here are a few things to do before talking divorce with your child:

  • Have a clear understanding of what you are going to say. Even if you have to write it down, you'll want to know exactly what you should cover during this conversation with your child.
  • Find a good time to discuss what's going on. You don't want to rush through this conversation, such as before your child goes to bed in the evening. Instead, schedule a time that makes sense for the two of you.
  • Have an idea of what your child will ask. Think about this long and hard before you bring up the topic of divorce. This will ensure that you have answers prepared for anything your child throws your way.

These are among the more important things you can do before talking about divorce with your child.

Once you have this out in the open, let your child know that you are available to answer questions at any time. From there, turn your attention to the divorce process itself and what you need to do to move forward as quickly and efficiently as possible.
